Diwali fair attracts shoppers in Jaipur

Submitted by admin on Wed, 10/14/2009 - 03:24

Jaipur, Oct 13 (ANI): Hundreds of residents thronged a Diwali fair at night here to shop ahead of the festival.

The eleven-day Diwali fair, which is organised by the Jawahar Kala Kendra, will conclude on October 15.

Rakesh Awasthi, organiser of the fair, said, "People coming to watch this cultural programme do not get only to shop, but they also get to enjoy the cultural programme. So, it serves two purposes."

Meanwhile, hundreds of shoppers like Ritu Roy really enjoyed shopping at night, which they said was a unique experience.

"During the day, the weather in the city is so hot that it does not permit you to shop. But during the night, it is at least pleasant and one can venture out and shop," said Roy.

Diwali, one of the major Hindu festivals, is celebrated to commemorate return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after completing 14 years in exile and killing demon king Ravana.

Lighting earthen lamps signifies welcoming Rama to Ayodhya and victory of good over evil. (ANI)
