U.S. stocks rose, oil price nears $73

NEW YORK, July 6 (UPI) -- U.S. stocks rose Friday after a key government report showed solid job growth, shrugging off rising bond yields and higher crude oil prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 45.84 points, or 0.34 percent, at 13,611.68. Nasdaq was up 9.86, or 0.37 percent, at 2,666.51 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index advanced 5.04, or 0.33 percent, at 1,530.44.

The volume was 1.25 billion shares traded on the big board with 1,995 stocks gaining and 1,294 declining.

Oil futures rose $1.00 to $72.81 a barrel, a steady upward march during the day, triggered in part by growing unrest in Nigeria.

Bonds fell. The 10-year note declined 10/32, or $3.125 for every $1,000 invested, to yield 5.189 percent.

The dollar was mixed. The euro was trading at $1.3626 from $1.3601 late Thursday, while the dollar was at 123.35 yen from 122.96 yen.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Labor Department said June non-farm payrolls increased 132,000, after swelling 190,000 in May and 122,000 in April.
