Geneva/New Delhi: The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today welcomed the United Nations Human Rights Council's decision to hold a special session on the situation of Myanmar in Geneva on October 2.
President of the UN Human Rights Council, H.E. Ambassador Doru-Romulus Costea of Romania announced today that 17 member States of the Council and 36 observer States had requested for the special session.
At least one third of the 47 member UN Body is required to sign a formal letter of request to hold a special session.
Only Democratic Republic of South Korea and Japan from the Asian bloc signed the request to hold the Special Session. The Indian External Affairs Ministry reportedly failed to send any instruction to its Permanent Mission in Geneva.
"The Human Rights Council must unequivocally condemn the Burmese Junta for serious human rights violations including the killings of the monks and other peaceful demonstrators, establish an international commission of inquiry into the human rights violations, and also establish monitoringissions of the Office of the UN High Commisioner for Human Rights inside Burma," said Suhas Chakma, Director of Asian Centre for Human Rights.
