Shahbaz not a proclaimed offender: Lahore High Court
Lahore, Dec 20 (ANI): A division bench of the Lahore High Court has said that former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif could not be considered a proclaimed offender, because he did not avoid appearing in court in the Sabzazar shootout case.
The bench said Shahbaz could only be declared a fugitive if proceedings under Section 87 and 88 had been duly completed against him or if he deliberately avoided appearing in court.
“None of this happened as far as Shahbaz is concerned,” it added.
Shahbaz was out of the country when he was named in the Sabzazar shootout case and a case was registered against him.
He tried to return to Pakistan to attend court proceedings in 2004, but was refused entry, the Daily Times reported.
These observations were made while the bench was deferring a petition that called for the cancellation of bail granted by an anti-Terrorism Court to Shahbaz.
Shahbaz was directly accused in the alleged police encounter in which five young men Salahuddin, Ashraf, Wakeel, Farooq and Rauf were killed.
The father of Salahuddin, Saeeduddin took the matter to the court.
In accordance with the directives of court, a case had been registered on January 2001. (ANI)
