Wenger accuses Alan Wiley of being over-friendly with Man U stars

Submitted by admin on Sat, 10/17/2009 - 23:39

London, Oct 17(ANI): Turning up the heat on the Manchester United-Alan Wiley controversy, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has accused Wiley of being over-friendly with some Old Trafford stars.

Wenger was referring to the incident during United's 2-2 draw against Sunderland on October 3, where Wiley was seen calling Man U striker Wayne Rooney by his nickname 'Wazza'.

"What was more shocking on the day was, well you watch the game again and you will see," The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

Wiley was also the fourth official seen laughing and joking with Sir Alex as Michael Owen scored the stoppage-time winner in Manchester derby last month.

Wenger also criticized Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for his accusations that Wiley and some of his fellow whistle blowers were unfit to handle top-flight games.

"Fitness-wise there is no problem in England with referees. Referees have to keep their distance from managers and players," Wenger said.

"When you ask me if I have been close to the referees I say no - I do not want to. For them to do their job in an objective way they have to keep their distance as much as possible," he added. (ANI)
